My artwork explores inherited memories, cultural identity, and migration through drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and fibers. As a Peruvian artist living in the United States, I reflect on what it means to carry stories across places and generations. I draw inspiration from the oral histories of my family, transforming memories that were never written down into visual forms that can be seen, shared, and preserved.
I move between mediums because no single material can fully express the complexity of my experiences. Instead, each artwork finds the medium it needs. I let the material guide the process, allowing each piece to develop in its own way. Creating helps me understand where I come from while making space for new narratives to emerge.
Through my work, I hope viewers reflect on the stories they carry, the memories they inherit, and the ways those experiences continue to shape who they are.
Artist Statement
Jennifer Cruz Ciprian (Fer) is a Peruvian multidisciplinary artist based in Fuquay Varina, NC. She started her studies in Industrial Design at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru in Lima and, later, changed her major to Sculpture after taking a ceramic course. After the COVID-19 pandemic, she moved to the United States to continue her education and seek new opportunities. During her time in Miami, she earned an Associate of Arts in Art at Miami Dade College and began working at museums where she discovered her passion for museum education and community engagement. Years later, she relocated to North Carolina. Fer is currently completing a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art at Meredith College.
Inspired by the stories shared by her family who migrated from the highlands to the capital (Lima, Peru) and her own migration experience to a new country, Fer turns memories and oral stories into a visual record while examining how identity shifts across time, place, and generations.
She invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between journey and transformation and to find echoes of their own experiences within the stories she shares.
